Fireplace Screens

Fireplace screens are available for less than $100 or more than $400. They serve a decorative and practical function. A fireplace screen can protect you from popping embers as the wood burns, and they can provide a lovely accent to your hearth coming in many styles and types.

A very popular style is the victorian fireplace screen. You can find these on ebay as well various vendors across the internet.

While some homeowners will choose a standard metal screen, others will go with a solid glass fireplace screen for a more complete protection. One drawback to this is the amount of heat it holds back from filling the room, although if your fireplace doesn't produce heat, or not very much then this wouldn't be a major concern.

When I was growing up we had a chainmail screen that opened and closed like curtains in front of the firplace. It was amazing how that screen would reduce the heat being produced simply by being closed. On a cold winter night I loved to open it wide and sit close to the fire, nearly sindging my skin. Several decades later these screens are much more decorative and not nearly as dirty as that chainmail screen got. My hands were often blackened from opening it.
